Three for Ballycomoyle as Ballinagore win club of year
The 2024 Scór Sinsir County Final took place on Saturday March 23 and truly showcased the immense talent within the eight participating clubs. A brilliant atmosphere of friendly rivalry was evident around the always hospitable Downs GAA Centre who hosted the final.
All in attendance were treated to a stellar spectacle of music, song, dance and drama. Aidan Walsh of St. Joseph’s GAA was Fear an Tí for the evening, who kept the clár moving swiftly.
Tráth na gCeisteanna (Question Time) saw the reigning county champions Mullingar Shamrocks once again claim the Johnny Garvin cup in impressive fashion. They overcame the challenge of St. Joseph’s and The Downs in the final round to earn a place in the Leinster final.
Opening the stage competitions in the Rince Foirne (Figure Dancing) St. Mary’s Rochfortbridge and The Downs battled it out in an entertaining contest. The Downs retained the title for a second year winning the Rob Cornally Cup with their performance of 8-hand jig.
In a hotly contested solo singing event, seven singers took to the stage and all gave excellent renditions of their pieces.
It was Ballycomoyle’s Clíodhan Daly who claimed the title for her club singing a beautiful version of ‘Passage West’. It was a battle between Ballinagore and St. Mary’s Rochfortbridge in the recitation/storytelling discipline where Pius Kirby and Kathleen Moran took to the stage and performed their pieces very well. Ballinagore’s Pius Kirby took the spoils with his version of ‘The Papisher And The Prod’.
The ballad group discipline saw three very polished groups taking to the stage. Moate All Whites, Ballinagore and Ballycomoyle performed to a very high standard and this was a tight competition between these three groups. After an exciting contest the county title was awarded to Ballycomoyle and they will march on to the Leinster semi-final.
Five excellent sketches from Kilbeggan Shamrocks, St. Mary’s Rochfortbridge, Ballinagore, Ballycomoyle and St. Joseph’s were presented in the novelty act category. All acts had the audience in stitches and it proved to be a very entertaining competition.
Ballycomoyle were top of the pile after the results were collected and claimed the county title winning the Hugh Slevin memorial cup.
The night concluded with rousing footwork in the Rince Seit (Set Dancing) where St Joseph’s emerged victorious at the expense of Ballycomoyle and The Downs. The young St. Joseph’s outfit took home their first senior medals with the group having collected many medals in Scór na nÓg and at fleadhanna cheoil in recent years.
Ballinagore were awarded with the title of ‘Club of the Year’ and were presented with the Eugene Doherty trophy.
Westmeath GAA County Board Chairman, Frank Mescall, presented the winners with their medals along with Cathaoirleach Scór Iarmhí Olive Leonard.
The winners of the county final will now go on to represent their club and county in the Leinster semi-finals in Birr on Sunday April 7 at 3pm.
The county will be well represented across the seven disciplines as they progress to the provincial stage of the competition.
