Mullingar's new world record holder

Mullingar has a new athletics world record holder.

Well known local athlete Brigid McCabe was part of an Irish relay team who smashed the Over 65 women 4 x 800m world record in Dublin at the weekend.

Mullingar Harriers stalwart Brigid and her team-mates were selected by the Irish Masters Athletic Association to try to break the previous world record of 14.49, held by the USA since 2022.

In order to facilitate their world record breaking attempt, Dublin Athletics added a 4 x 800m relay race to the programme at the Dublin Graded Meeting in Santry last Sunday afternoon, where conditions were perfect for the Irish team.

Brigid was selected to run the third leg and when she handed the baton over, the team were well ahead of schedule and finished in 12:59.94, chopping an incredible 1 minute 49 seconds off the previous record.

Mullingar’s new world record holder’s team mates are Mary Browne (Mayo AC), Noreen Bonner (Finn Valley AC) and Pauline Moran (Mayo AC).

In their weekly notes in the Westmeath Examiner, Mullingar Harriers congratulated Brigid and her team mates, noting “it’s not often we have a world record holder in our midst”.
