The new plaque at Castlepollard Hurling Club.The Castlepollard GAA Club has undergone significant development in recent years and on Monday May 6, the €1m development was officially opened and named in honour of the late Donal ‘Duck’ Devine.
The facilities include an astro turf pitch, which can cater for five-a-side games, a new full size training pitch that is floodlit, a new hall, dressing rooms and a referee’s room.
The club has also added a new state-of-the-art gym and can now boast some 300 members, with hurling and camogie fully integrated.
Thomas Byrne TD, Minister of State at the Department of Tourism, Culture,
Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media and Equality at the Department of Education was special guest on the day.
It certainly does justice to the memory of Donal ‘Duck’ Devine, whose tragic passing some six years ago following a training session at the club rocked the entire community.
Donal joined his brothers Noel, Alfie, Brendan and Oliver as Castlepollard hurlers for so many years and followed in the footsteps of his dad, Frank.
Donal, a tenacious midfielder, was the pulse of the fine Castlepollard teams which won Westmeath senior titles in 1995, 1997, 2003 and 2005.
Club chairman is Brian McCabe and secretary is Patrick McCabe.
Capital funding was secured for the project which has really enhanced the club and will serve the club and the wider community for generations to come.
