Loreto students win award for ‘Dídeanaí’ documentary

Students from Loreto College Mullingar have won an award for ‘Dídeanaí’ in the Trócaire documentary film making programme ‘The Right Focus'.

There were innovative entries from young people in post primary schools and youth groups around Ireland exploring global justice issues, and students voted on their favourite documentaries from the 12 that made it to the finals at the Light House Cinema in Dublin.

Niamh McDermott from Loreto Mullingar said: “I thought The Right Focus was really good and I would definitely do it again. I learned a lot about different aspects of my community and in school.”

Loreto teacher Deirdre O’Reilly said the girls had learned a lot from the experience. “We will definitely participate again in future competitions. A wonderful experience for the students, it broadened their minds and made them think about issues that they had never considered before.”

Caoimhe de Barra, Trócaire CEO, said: “Throughout history, documentaries have been important on social justice issues, informing, educating and mobilising people to take action.

“To this day, Trócaire use documentaries on all of the big issues we care about and what we mobilise people around. We are so impressed with the documentaries produced by all the students, the themes they chose are interesting and hugely relevant to today’s world, spanning important issues such as war and conflict, climate change, business and human rights, gender equality and refugees.”
