New security fencing installed on sections of Athlone greenway

Athlone councillor Frankie Keena has welcomed the recent installation of 150 metres of security fencing along the Old Rail Trail greenway in Athlone.

The new fencing was erected to the rear of some of the houses in Altown and Garrycastle.

"This fencing has long been awaited by the residents, who had concerns about easy access from the greenway into the back gardens of their properties," said Cllr Keena.

"Over the last couple of years, I received numerous representations from the affected residents on this issue, following which I carried out a survey which was requested by the council and subsequently I had the council's director of services and district engineer on site to explore best options on how to proceed.

"This eight foot high green fencing should now help provide the necessary security for these residents," he said.

The Fianna Fáil councillor added that, in addition to this, screening fencing would also be erected along the greenway at Roslevin Lawns following requests from residents.

"I would like to thank Westmeath County Council for doing this work in these areas and indeed the members of the public for raising these matters with me," Cllr Keena concluded.
