LE Candidates Q&A: Niall Gaffney (FF)
Kinnegad LEA
1. Tell us a bit about yourself
I’m a first-time candidate from Delvin running for Fianna Fáil. I’m 27 years old, living in Delvin and working as a barrister on the Midland Circuit.
2. Why did you get involved in politics?
I got involved in politics when studying law at NUIG in 2014. I was involved in the Student Union as a class rep, and a big concern for students was the rising cost of accommodation. I attended an Ógra Fianna Fáil meeting and was met by a group of young, energetic and passionate people who wanted to work together for everyone in NUIG. From then on, I was hooked!
3. What are the big issues?
Road safety is a massive issue in our area. People want to feel safe when using our roads, whether they are walking, cycling, or driving. I think road conditions, speed, and traffic calming measures in our towns and villages are big issues that I want to work on.
4. Who is your role model?
A political role model of mine is Sean Lemass.
5. What are your hobbies?
I’m a big GAA fan. I love hiking and fishing, and pretty much anything outdoors!
6. Tell us one thing about yourself that people will be surprised to read
Last June, two friends and I raised over €1,500 for the One-in-Four Charity by completing a 24-hour survival challenge in the Wicklow Mountains.
