LE Candidates Q&A: Damien Rooney (Sinn Féin)
Mullingar LEA
1. Tell us a little about yourself
I am 53 years of age, living in Mullingar for 16 years. I am a father and grandfather who, like so many others, faces the daily challenges for our community today. I've worked for An Post for 30 years.
2. Why did you get involved in politics?
I suppose I've always been involved. I've been a trade union activist for 30 years. I decided to run because I face the same problems as so many in the community and I am for change. I don't want to be the hurler in the ditch.
3. What are the big issues in your area?
Housing, healthcare, education, cost of living. I have been talking to a lot of young people lately who have been hit by the housing problems; they, like so many working families, now find themselves with a job but no home to call their own.
4. Who is your role model?
I've been very lucky in life to have many role models. However, I must say my children and grandchildren at the moment are knocking it out of the park when it comes to inspiring me. Their ability to find goodness in everyone and their openness to change, they are true role models.
5. What are your hobbies?
I love history, sport, music and I'm a keen wild swimmer and can be found regularly 12 months of the year between my two main swimming spots of Lough Owel in Mullingar and the 40 foot in Sandycove Dublin.
6. Tell us one thing about yourself that people will be surprised to read
I was once a roadie for Daniel O'Donnell.
