LE Candidates Q&A: Gerry Heery (FG)
Mullingar LEA
1. Tell us a little about yourself
I grew up in Cullionbeg, part of a large family. I went to Curraghmore NS, and St Mary's CBS. Playing hurling for Cullion and football for Bunbrosna and St Mary's CBS were hugely important in my formative development. I became a teacher in 1984, and shortly afterwards emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts. I returned to Mullingar in 1997, and began teaching in St Brigid's School, Mullingar. Teaching there has deepened my awareness and sensitivity to people with disabilities. I am married to Mary and we have two children, Joshua and Rebecca.
2. Why did you get involved in politics?
Teaching and politics have at their core the desire to help, support and improve the lives of peoples that we encounter. This belief and my experiences of working with Minister Peter Burke have demonstrated to me that public service is important and essential to promote a just and fair society.
3. What are the big issues?
Lack of affordable housing. Traffic congestion.
The need for greater support for people with disabilities and their families.
4. Who is your role model?
Seamus Heaney.
5. What are your hobbies?
Cycling with the Lakeside Wheelers, reading, Sudoku puzzles, chess, gardening, fishing.
6. Tell us one thing about yourself that people will be surprised to read
With two students from St Brigid's, we caught a salmon in the canal. How did it get there?
