LE Candidates Q&A: Fidelma Bennett (Labour)

Mullingar LEA

1. Tell us a little about yourself

I’m a proud Mullingar woman, born and reared in the town. My father, Jimmy Bennett, was a local politician and publican. I have a background in business and teaching, but am probably best known for my work with a local homeless charity supporting women and children. I retired last June, which gives me the time I feel is required to be a successful local representative.

2. Why did you get involved in politics?

Coming from a political house, I developed an interest that has stayed with me all my life. I became aware from a young age of the day-to-day problems of ordinary people and the role of the local politician in working for them. I have been involved in many political campaigns. I believe it is important for members of the community to come together to improve our environment and living spaces.

3. What are the big issues?

Mullingar’s traffic problems are a constant conversation at the doors. Many residents are asking for speed bumps or rumble strips to slow down traffic in their areas. Of particular concern is the safety of children walking or cycling to school; the lack of pedestrian crossings – and very worryingly – motorists not always stopping at these crossings. Lack of childcare places, school places, and increased supports for children with special needs are also a concern for many parents.

4. Who is your role model?

Mary Robinson.

5. What are your hobbies?

Music, travel, current affairs, meditation.

6. Tell us one thing about yourself that people will be surprised to read

I have a degree in Anthropology and Philosophy.
