LE Candidates Q&A: Cllr Emily Wallace (FG)
Kinnegad LEA
1. Tell us a bit about yourself?
I am a mother of three, working in Mullingar and farming in Gaybrook, Milltownpass having spent my childhood growing up in Clonkill.
I’m the chair of Westmeath Community Games and a former camogie player with Crookedwood.
I have been a Westmeath County Councillor for nine years now.
I have a business degree and also hold a Diploma in Community Development.
2. Why did you get involved in politics?
I got involved after seeing how big international companies like wind farms were trying to pull the wool over small communities.
Being a council member enables me to inform locals of what’s happening in their community, good or bad, and allows me to have a voice on their behalf.
3. What are the big issues?
The regeneration of rural towns and villages in the county and developing community facilities.
Also improving transport links, increasing garda presence in rural communities and developing Kinnegad and Rochfortbridge as employment centres.
It’s important to have people who understand rural issues at the table when funding is allocated so small communities don’t miss out and all the money doesn’t go to Athlone.
4. Who is your role model?
The independent women in my life, from family and friends, they have inspired me so much.
You can’t be a hurler on the ditch, if you want action you need to get out on the pitch and get involved.
5. What are your hobbies?
I love watercolour painting and have exhibited with Brosna Art Group and I also like to walk and read.
6. Tell us one thing about yourself that people will be surprised to read?
We better keep this quiet, but I was born in Raharney and I’ve also previously been secretary of Westmeath Camogie.
