LE Candidates Q&A: David Jones (SF)

Kinnegad LEA

1. Tell us a bit about yourself

I have been involved in community work from a young age. In 2013, I was one of the founding members of the Delvin tractor run, which has raised a substantial amount for charities and local causes, including the local graveyard extension.

I was recently appointed a peace commissioner. I began the council work four years ago – un-elected and in a voluntary role.

I didn’t want to be a candidate who just showed up last minute, I actually wanted to make an effort and prove to constituents that I am willing to put in the groundwork.

2. Why did you get involved in politics?

I want to ensure that each community has a voice, not just my own. Over the years I have witnessed areas being let down and funding going to the larger towns, while the smaller towns and villages get left behind.

3. What are the big issues?

Small towns and villages have been let down by the county development plan. There has been a larger concentration on areas with a denser population.

4. Who is your role model?

Community volunteers act as my role models. Very often, they do not get the credit they deserve, and in some cases get abused for simply trying to improve their community.

5. What are your hobbies?

I enjoy going to tractor runs. Over the years I have had many tractors, some that I bought for less than €800, so you can just imagine the condition of them.

6. Tell us one thing about yourself that people will be surprised to read

I have a twin brother and often he is stopped on the street and wished the best of luck with the local elections.
