LE Candidates Q&A: John Lawlor (SF)
Moate LEA
1. Tell us a bit about yourself
I have been living in Westmeath for the last 26 years. I’m married with one daughter, three sons and two grandsons. I worked in construction most of my life, but have since retrained as a healthcare worker. I have enjoyed working in this role for the last 10 years.
2. Why did you get involved in politics?
Local community is both a professional and voluntary passion of mine. Being a local councillor would mean that I can provide greater outreach and facilitate much needed change.
3. What are the big issues?
Housing – a lack of available homes has led to extortionate pricing, which has left people out of both the buying and rental markets. Protect renter/owner rights.
Easier access to healthcare and family support services.
Equal access to education: early intervention for all age groups is a priority. I will try to make sure that no child’s educational needs will go unheeded and hope to provide a bridge between them and the support services.
Better infrastructure and public transport for small towns, villages and rural areas. Having access to efficient transport and shelters will help create better networked communities.
Play parks and safe spaces for children: these help foster greater physical, mental and social wellbeing, while also preventing antisocial behaviour.
4. Who is your role model?
As a youth support worker, I lobby on behalf of young people to help provide them with greater independence. Watching these young people tackle their challenges inspires me to be the best support worker and community servant I can.
5. What are your hobbies?
My hobbies include woodworking and fishing.
6. Tell us one thing about yourself that people will be surprised to read
People will probably be surprised to hear I’m going for a seat on the local council.
