Quinlan and co down plucky St Cremin's

The Downs NS 4-11 St Cremin's NS 2-4

A well-drilled side from The Downs proved too strong for a plucky outfit representing St Cremin’s, Multyfarnham in the penultimate game of the 2024 finals in TEG Cusack Park last Thursday afternoon.

With a very useful wind behind them blowing towards the scoreboard end of the ground, the team in black and amber were ten points to the good at the interval (3-6 to 1-2). They had an unanswered 1-2 on the board – the goal from Tiernan Coyne, and a point apiece from outstanding forwards Aidan Quinlan and Cónal Murphy – before Darragh Orme opened Multy’s account from a free. The winners went on to outscore St Cremin’s by 2-4 (both goals scored by James Kenna, and the points via a Quinlan brace, and one each from Oisín Coyne and Kenna) to 1-1 (a slapped goal by Robert Whelan and a point from Orme).

A Tiernan Coyne early in the second moiety increased The Downs’ lead, but the maroon and white-clad outfit responded with a great goal from Zack Timoumi and a low-trajectory point from Orme. However, that was as good as it got for the Multyfarnham side who could only add one more point to their tally (albeit a marvellous sideline kick by Orme), while The Downs tagged on another 1-4 (the goal from Quinlan preceding points from Oisín Coyne, a Murphy free, a classy effort from Rian Gilhooley, and another from play by Quinlan).

After the match, the chairman of Cumann na mBunscol in Westmeath, Derek Butler presented the cup to the winning captain, Oisín Coyne.
