HSE highlights rise in Covid-19 infections

Members of the public are being advised of a current increase in Covid-19 infections in the community.

The Department of Public Health, HSE West and North West, said a new variant of the virus, JN.1, was currently circulating in Ireland and had resulted in an increase in outbreaks in nursing homes, hospitals and other healthcare settings.

It said ongoing awareness of the symptoms of Covid-19, and taking steps to prevent its spread in both the community and healthcare settings, remained important in order to protect those most vulnerable.

People who have any symptoms of Covid-19 and feel unwell should stay at home until 48 hours after their symptoms are mostly or fully gone, and should also avoid contact with other people, especially people at higher risk from Covid-19, the HSE said.

Dr Áine McNamara, Area Director of Public Health, Department of Public Health HSE West and North West, said: "We are reminding everyone of the importance of taking steps to prevent the spread of serious illness from Covid-19, particularly for those most vulnerable in our community.

"Avoid visiting those in healthcare settings such as hospitals and nursing homes if you are experiencing Covid-19 symptoms."

To prevent the spread of Covid-19, people are encouraged to

* wash your hands properly and often

* cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue or your sleeve - put used tissues into a bin and wash your hands

* let fresh air into your home by opening windows, doors and air vents as much as possible

* clean objects and surfaces that other people touch.
