More than 130 at Vocational School 50-year reunion night
More than 130 people who were students at Mullingar Vocational School attended a reunion event to mark the 50th anniversary of the class of 1974, in the Annebrook House Hotel on Saturday June 8.
Many of the guests hadn’t seen one another since their school days, at what is now known as Mullingar Community College.
Students who attended the school in the ’70s were invited along with past and present teachers. Past principals, John Maher and Anne Hanley were present on the evening as well as current principal of the community college, Seamus Mohan.
Event organiser Caroline Egan said the evening was “a great success”.
“It was one of the best nights in many years. I received many phone calls, text messages, and even people calling out to the house to compliment the great night it was.”
A number of those who attended had travelled long distances, from all parts of the country and even abroad. “A few people were home from England for the event, and Clare and Cork,” said Caroline.
“I started preparing for the event with the help of my husband last January, booking, securing tickets, printing tickets, preparing props to decorate the hall and trying to locate people.
“I’d just like to add that there was a donation box there on the night for LARCC, and there was some money that was handed over to LARCC yesterday. It’s not yet counted, but I’d just like to thank all the business people of Mullingar and across Ireland, really, that were so generous in donating spot prizes.
Caroline recounted one interesting little story from the night: “One of the girls, Ber Coleman, had a novel, a book by Enid Blyton, with her to give to a classmate from 50 years ago – Ber had that book in her possession all those years, as she had borrowed it 50 years ago to read – when she was 11 or 12. And on the reunion night, the owner was there, Noonie Costello, and Ber returned the book!”
