Mullingar GP next up for busy Lakeside Wheelers

Lakeside Wheelers club notes

Over recent weeks, Lakeside Wheelers has hosted the National Paracycling TT league, the annual Tour of the Lakes sportive, launched the 2024 Sprocket Rocket programme, and introduced a new Cycling for Adults series. With these successful events still ongoing, it's now time for the race committee to focus on the Mullingar GP.

This year's race is part of Round 5 of the Cycling Ireland National Road Race Series, a prestigious accolade for the club. The race is scheduled for Sunday July 7, and registration is live on Eventmaster.

The route and race HQ remain unchanged, and Multyfarnham is the focal point. The 34km route will take racers from Multy through Crookedwood, Castlepollard, Coole, and back via the bog road, known for its challenging sections and wind-dictated outcomes.

An exciting addition this year is the reintroduction of an U16 race for boys and girls. Racing will start at 9.30am for the U16s, and senior races commence at 11.30am.

An after-race party will follow, providing an opportunity for all involved to share stories over food and drinks.

Members available to marshal are asked to contact Shay O’Toole or Jack Nugent to assist with race organisation.

Recent Racing

Last weekend, Bray Wheelers promoted races where Timmy Murphy and Padraig Moran represented Lakeside Wheelers. Both finished impressively, Timmy taking fourth in the Ronnie Coates Memorial for A4s and Padraig securing fifth in the Christy McManus A1/A2 event. Well done to both!

The 2024 National Cycling Championships will be held next weekend, hosted by Newcastle West in Limerick. These championships provide a rare chance to see top Irish pros compete on home soil. Ben Healy, the current men’s champion, is a favourite, but many young cyclists will aim to challenge him.

Local interest is high in the ladies race, with Caoimhe and Aoife O’Brien, new lifetime members of Lakeside Wheelers, competing. Caoimhe aims to improve on her silver medal from last year, while Aoife seeks to make her mark. Good luck to both in Limerick. Padraig Moran and Stuart Cox will also represent the club in the men’s race.

Thank You

The committee of Lakeside Wheelers Mullingar extends a big thank you to the Social and Cultural committee at North Midlands Credit Union for including our club in the latest round of awards. This support is greatly appreciated and will assist with club events.
