Ballycomoyle GAA hold event to discuss suicide prevention and awareness
Ballycomoyle GAA are hosting a suicide prevention and awareness evening this Thursday (June 27th) in Castle Varagh Hotel, Castlepollard.
Claire Nugent, Healthy Club officer, said: “Our club and our community have been harrowed by the loss of friends and family to suicide, and as a club, we asked ourselves what can we do to help our community to begin the conversation around this difficult subject.
“We have discussed how important it was that we consider the skills we can acquire to keep people safe from suicide, identify people who are at risk and confidently ask about the topic of suicide and connect to resources and supports available to us.”
Families recently bereaved by suicide have helped the club to organise the event and the speaker on the night is Patrick Jones, a HSE resource officer for suicide prevention.
“This event will help us to talk about and promote good mental health, and Patrick will be explaining the skills, and resources available to us as a club and us a community to work towards suicide prevention,” said Claire.
“This event is open to everyone over 18 – it will be a safe space to foster the important conversations that so many of our members have told us they would like to have.
“Our club are rooted in the community and we feel a deep connection to our families and hope this is the first of many events we will host that support mental health and support.”
The evening begins at 7.30pm and refreshments will be served. If you would like further information, you can contact Claire on 087 9020169.
