The Class of 2024 at the start of their graduation event at Wilson’s Hospital School.

Wilson’s mark end of term

There is always a flurry of activities at the end of a school year. In Wilson’s this year, one of these was to mark the graduation of the Class of 2024. The event with the students, staff and families, started with a lovely service in the school Chapel led by Chaplain Luke Hawkins.

School principal, Mr Milling, said it has been a pleasure to get to know the Class of 2024 and he wished them great success and happiness and reminded them that they will always be Wilsonians.

Some of the members of the class led the singing and music and there were readings and prayers to inspire the students as they move on in their lives.

Head girl, Juliet Hunter, and head boy, Alpha Matuluko, made some lovely presentations before everyone went to the school dining room for a gorgeous meal prepared by Brook Foods. It was such a nice evening for everyone.

Their year head Ms Beirne and Chaplain Hawkins organised a day out at Jump Zone and some retail therapy at Liffey Valley shopping centre to end their final week in school. They had great fun as a group participating in the various activities.

The annual Sports Day is much anticipated by all the students at Wilson’s. It starts on the previous evening with the running of the Weafer Mile race (named for Mr Joe Weafer, who was such a sports enthusiast and inspiration for everyone he met).

This year, the junior students all took part in a soccer tournament while the seniors played a tag rugby tournament. The winners of the tag competition played a staff team, and the staff won this year. The evening ended with a huge limbo competition in the Concert Hall.

Sports day saw all the students taking part in activities in rotation with their year groups. There were a few passing showers, but they were lucky with the weather holding mostly dry. Activities ranged between dodgeball, tug-o-war, rounders, novelty races, tag rugby and soccer.

There was ice cream for everyone at break time and then the Annual Sports Presentations took place in the Weafer Hall.

This year, the awards for Girls and Boys Athlete of the Year were presented at Awards Night (now held in May). They went to Lauren Power and Callum Mulligan. Many congratulations to them for their enthusiasm, skill and participation.

The end of the year also means some staff changes. Ms Carol Wade is retiring, after teaching in the Wilson’s for more than 26 years. Mr Gavan Kierans retires following 16 years teaching in the school. Chaplain Luke Hawkins also departs Wilson’s at the end of the year to take up a huge opportunity for him with the Church of Ireland Youth Department.

There was a whole school assembly recently to mark say goodbye and wish him well. The school board, staff and students all wish those members of staff, and others who will be moving on, well, and thank them for everything they have done throughout their time at the school.

The Transition Year Finale was the final event before the school exams started. All students in WHS do Transition Year and the event is a showcase of the work they have carried out all year. It gives their parents and other students in the school a chance to see some of the work they have done and to hear about some of the various activities and workshops they have taken part in.

Carly Hyde was MC for the afternoon, and introduced the speakers who addressed the assembled students and parents.

Ms Devaney (programme co-ordinator) congratulated them all and thanked their parents for the support throughout the year. She wished them well as they move into Form 5 next year.

The school year ended with the school exams for Years 1, 2, 4 and 5. The school magazine, The Wilsonian was published too. Many congratulations to Mr and Mrs Mahony, Mr Luthers and the editorial team of students involved in this year’s production.

It’s been a busy year at Wilson’s Hospital School, and all there wish the Leaving Cert and Junior Cert students good luck in their state exams followed by a happy and safe summer break. We are already looking forward to next academic year and meeting our new students.
