Emper and Forgney schools work together on ‘Oliver’

Emper NS and Forgney NS worked collaboratively on the production of Lionel Bart’s musical ‘Oliver’ at Mullingar Arts Centre. Principals Adrian Coughlan and Kathryn Keenan have extended a ‘Míle Buíochas’ to the team there for inviting both schools to participate in the musical; and for making pupils and staff feel so welcome and comfortable.

There was a full house on Thursday June 13 last, as the Victorian-era musical based on Oliver Twist was performed by talented students from Emper and Forgney.

Mr Coughlan said: “Oliver has been an enjoyable experience for all our pupils, both socially and academically. It was wonderful to see the joy in all the children’s faces.”

Mrs Keenan agreed, and said: “Participating in the production of Oliver also allows students to develop their creative and performance abilities.

“Whether they are singing, dancing, or acting, students have the opportunity to showcase their talents and express themselves in a meaningful way. This not only boosts their confidence and self-esteem but also helps them to refine their skills and pursue their passions in the performing arts.”

Other staff members were also delighted. “It’s been a wonderful learning opportunity for both schools,” said Mr Shannon (Shared SET), who supported both schools in the production.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for the children to showcase their many talents,” said Bernie Rhatigan SNA

The pupils (aged 5-12) started rehearsing in March and learned their lines and songs so well that they were confident in their various roles, and were beaming with enthusiasm during the performance.

Every student seemed to find a part that suited their personality and character. Sam and Cathy (Mullingar Arts Centre tutors) held auditions, selected the actors, guided and directed all involved in the show.

From the opening number to the finale, with the stage, set designs, props, costumes, sound and lighting, the audience experienced a true Victorian-era London theatrical treat.

Students had different roles and responsibilities, and delivered solo and they displayed their exceptional vocal skills and dramatic expressions. The choreography was cleverly creative, varied and kept the audience engaged throughout the show.

The proceeds of a raffle held on the night assisted with the financing of the musical.

Emper and Forgney National Schools would sincerely like to thank all who sponsored the event, and supported both schools in the preparation and production of ‘Oliver.

“We extend gratitude to all who sponsored and supplied raffle prizes including: Emper and Forgney boards of management, Forgney GAA, Affinity Credit Union, Ballymahon, Mary and Brian Finnegan, Hair Mechanics (Mullingar), Emper Community Development Group, The Murtagh and Finlass Families (Forgney), Edward and Kathryn Keenan, Ballymahon Autoparts, Anne and Willie Penrose, Helina and Eddie Maguire, Whyte’s Supermarket – Legan, Cllr Johnnie Penrose, Abbeyshrule Bouncy Castles, Grace Maxwell Therapy and many more.

“From building teamwork and discipline to developing their creative and performance skills, students gained valuable experience that will serve them well for many years to come.

“One of the main advantages of students taking part in the musical was the opportunity to work as a team. The production required students to collaborate with their peers in the other school, learning choreography and practising harmonies.

“That teamwork fosters a sense of camaraderie and unity among the students, helping them to develop essential skills for working in a group setting.

“Pupils also learned discipline and time management skills through their involvement. Students had to prioritise their responsibilities on the day of the performance and manage their time effectively.

“Overall, all students who took part in ‘Oliver’ gained valuable experience that will benefit them in multiple aspects of their lives – from teamwork and discipline to creativity and performance skills, students have reaped the rewards of their hard work and dedication to the production. Comhghairdeas!”
