New chapter for Kilbeggan Library

An extensive renovation and refurbishment of Kilbeggan Library, which has now begun, will allow the implementation of the My Open Library service, say Westmeath County Council.

My Open Library allows registered members of the public to access self service facilities in the library from 8am to 10pm every day. It provides greater accessibility to the library and has proved successful in Mullingar, Castlepollard and Moate.

The service is available to adults, and 16–17-year-olds with parental permission.

The first step in delivery of the refurbishment of Kilbeggan Library took place with the signing of the contracts between Westmeath County Council and Michael Bracken and Sons for the construction works. The project is being delivered with funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development and Westmeath County Council.

Michael Bracken and Sons are a Ballycumber-based firm with wide experience in delivery of projects of this nature, the council said in a statement. They were awarded the contract after the public competitive tender process.

The works will include conservation repairs and modification to the protected structure as well as ensuring that the building is revitalised as a modern, welcoming library.

The scheme for Kilbeggan Library is designed by Westmeath County Council’s in-house architectural team.

During the closure, library members can continue to use other local libraries and avail of access to online audiobook, magazines and ebooks. Cntact library@westmeathcoco.ie for further information.
