Men’s swimming group starting next week at Diving Boards

A men’s swimming group is set to start next week at the diving boards at Lough Owel.

It’s part of Blueballs Ireland, a national organisation focused on supporting men’s mental health and fostering community.

Local organiser Damien Rooney is involved with a branch in Dublin.

"I joined a group in Sandycove two years ago after it was featured on PJ Gallagher’s documentary on mental health and thought it was great," he said.

"It was formed because there were lots of women’s groups around but there was a notable absence of men’s groups, which is also true in Mullingar.

“I go there every Monday, and I recently approached the organisers about setting up a branch in Mullingar. They were really helpful and supportive about it."

The first swim is set to take place on Wednesday, July 24, and Damien said all are welcome.

"It’s a social thing too, it’s for everyone and anyone who is interested. You don’t have to be suffering from mental health issues to join," he said.

"We have had talks in our Sandycove group before from ex-footballers and pundits, sharing their stories of mental health and addiction.

“Hopefully, we can grow the group here over time and bring in activities like that too."

Damien added that "there’s no better place" for such a group than Lough Owel.

"It’s a fantastic lake, great for swimming," he said.

"The county council is also looking at upgrading swimming facilities around the county at the moment, and the more use Lough Owel gets, the more chance it has of being upgraded.

“One thing it needs is a shelter for people to change in when it’s raining.

“Shelters have been there before but were taken away due to anti-social behaviour. Things are different now and they should be brought back."

The swimming group is free to all and will take place weekly on Wednesdays at 7:30pm.
