John Joe Nevin returning to the ring after five-year absence
An Olympic medal winner from Mullingar is returning to the ring almost five years after his last fight.
John Joe Nevin will be fighting in Jiutepec, Mexico, on August 17 against a yet-to-be-announced opponent.
The 'Mullingar Shuffler,' who won silver at the 2012 Olympics in London, has an undefeated professional record of 14-0.
The 35-year-old last fought in November 2019 and now runs a boxing gym on Patrick Street in Mullingar.
Taking to social media after the fight was announced, John Joe shared his excitement to get back in the ring:
"Who said I was retired? I'm always ready to rumble; watch me make an impact," he said.
"As I tell all my boxers, it's never too late; there's not much mileage on the engine.
“It's like parking a new car in a garage for a few years: you take her out, dust her off, change the oil – then watch her shine and go through the gears."
John Joe is a two-time Olympian, having also competed in Beijing in 2008 at the age of 18.
