Two charged with robbing woman in her 80s in Athlone

Two men have been charged with robbing a woman in her 80s by stealing a gold bracelet off her hand at a retail premises in the Athlone area last week.

A spokesperson for Athlone Gardai said the incident happened while the woman was out shopping in the town on Wednesday (July 17).

The stolen bracelet was described as an expensive piece of jewellery and one which had sentimental value for its owner.

A Garda investigation resulted in two men being arrested last Thursday morning.

The two men, one of whom is in his 30s while the other is in his 40s, are understood to be from the Tullamore area. They appeared in court on Friday last, and were remanded in custody.

Their case is due to come before Athlone District Court today (Wednesday).

The bracelet has been recovered.

The Garda spokesperson said that, in addition to the two men, a third person was arrested in connection with the incident over the weekend. This arrest involved a female who has been charged with handling stolen property.

An Garda Siochana thanked members of public for their assistance.

Separately, there were nine arrests in Athlone last Saturday night for various incidents of public disorder, the majority of which were drink-related.
