Scratch Cup winner Brian Doran of Millicent GC.

Millicent’s Brian Doran takes prestigious Scratch Cup title

Mullingar Golf Club notes

Mullingar Golf Club, in association with Golf Ireland, hosted the Mullingar Scratch Trophy 2024 on Sunday and Monday August 4 and 5.

Sponsored by Pinergy and Sherry Fitzgerald / Davitt & Davitt, this prestigious event continued to attract the very best amateur golfers including four of our own members representing Mullingar GC, Adam Smith, Gareth Carr, David Kennaghan and Mikey Mina Roynane.

Weather conditions and fast greens contributed to challenging conditions but these did not stop some excellent golf being played. After the first two rounds the joint leaders on -5 were David Howard from Fota Island and Brian Doran from Millicent. In third place from Dooks was Conor Hickey on -4. With cut at +4 the top 39 and tied players including Adam Smith on +2 advanced to the next rounds scheduled for Monday.

After scoring seven birdies during his third round, Millicent’s Brian Doran (70) edged in front for a two shot lead at -7 for (209). Joint second were, from Malahide Gavin O’Neill (211) and Fota Island’s David Howard (211), both on -5 Still in the hunt was Adam Smith Mullingar on level par for a score of 216.

With such a small margin between the top 10 players, it was all to play for in the final round. With large crowds following the last two groups and with a slight improvement in the weather, the Kildare native further extended his lead with a four under par round for a total of 277 and a final total score of 11 under par to claim this prestigious trophy.

In second place was Gavin O’Neill from Malahide on 279, 9 under par. David Reddan from Nenagh was third with a final round of 71 and a total score of 283, 5 under par.

Adam Smith finished on level par in joint seventh place with a score of 288 comprising 73, 73, 70 and 72. Well done Adam and congratulations on an excellent display of golf over the weekend and to all who participated in this event.

Of course this event could not happen without the assistance and support from the many club volunteers who acted as ball spotters, starters and admin duties. A special word of thanks must go to our wonderful course maintenance team headed by David Perdisatt who presented the course in such great condition for the competition.

Our club PRO Corry Doherty and his staff, Gerry Bawle with the bar and catering staff and Serena Walsh with the office staff, all contributed to the smooth running of the event. Thanks also must go to Golf Ireland, a key partner, in this tournament and also Conor Moore who was so generous with his time and support for this competition.

A special thanks to our committed sponsors, Pinergy and Sherry Fitzgerald, Davitt & Davitt for their ongoing support. Without their support, elevating this tournament each year could not be achieved.
