Heritage Week in Castlepollard

On Saturday 17 August at 8pm in the Men’s Shed, Church Street, Castlepollard, Bill Ryan will give a talk on the first newspaper printed and published in Westmeath. All welcome. Entrance free.

Professor Kathleen Mulchrone – Fore’s Renowned Celtic Scholar and Author

Kathleen Mulchrone (1895-1973) was a trailblazer in Celtic studies in the last century. She attended school in Fore NS and Loreto College, Mullingar. She distinguished herself in the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) and was author of a scholarly book on St Patrick. Ruth Illingworth, historian, will give a talk on about her life and achievements in Fore Abbey Café (downstairs) on Monday 19 August at 8pm.

Kathleen was highly regarded internationally for her studies in the University Bonn, where she was awarded a PHd. After her much applauded work with the Manuscripts Commission of the RIA in Dublin, she became Professor of Irish in University College Galway. She died in Mullingar in 1973 and is buried in Ballyglass cemetery.

Guided Walk of Castlepollard

There is a guided walk of Castlepollard town on Tuesday 20 August at 7.30pm, beginning outside the Church of Ireland in the town square. The tour guide will be Bill Ryan of North Westmeath Historical Society. All are welcome and there is no fee.

Castlepollard was set up under a charter from King Charles II in the late 17th century. It was a planned town built around a square and village green. This heritage walk will visit landmark buildings, including Kinturk house, Killafree churchyard, the Town Hall and Church Street.
