'Big Mountains and the Big House' - Heritage Week event in Belvedere House

This Saturday (August 24) Belevedere House and Gardens will host a panel of speakers who will explore the many Westmeath links to global mountaineering history.

Frank Nugent will speak about the Irish pioneers during the 'golden age of Alpine exploration,' including Anthony Adams Reilly of Mullingar, among others.

Ian Kenneally will talk about Belvedere House's last private owner Charles Howard Bury and his participation in the 1921 British reconnaissance mission to Mount Everest, including photos from Howard-Bury's own collection.

Ruth Illingworth will discuss the many owners of Belvedere House, including Charles Howard Bury and Rex Beaumont. Marc McMenamin will talk about the renowned mountaineer George Mallory, his links to Ireland and his death on Mount Everest in 1924.

Belvedere House will open for the event at 10am, with the first speaker at 10.30am.
