Delvin GAA celebrate opening of new astroturf and skills wall

Delvin GAA Club took a significant step forward in its development today, Sunday August 25, with the official opening of a new astroturf pitch and skills wall, marking a momentous occasion for the local community.

The event coincided with the annual Lá Na Club Day, a celebration that brought together members, players, and supporters.

Michael Kelly, secretary of Delvin GAA, expressed his enthusiasm for the new facilities. “The AstroTurf pitch is a much-needed addition. We’ve had only one grass pitch, which wasn’t very durable during the winter months, often becoming wet and soggy. The new astroturf will allow us to train all year round, making a significant difference, especially for our younger players.”

The project, which has been in the pipeline for several years, represents a strategic investment by the club. “We initially planned to upgrade our clubhouse, but after Covid hit, we reconsidered our priorities,” Michael said.

“The executive committee decided that investing in the AstroTurf and skills wall would be more beneficial for the future of the club.”

Michael said funds were raised over a long period, “possibly 10 to 12 years”.

“In recent years, we’ve ramped up our fundraising activities.”

The new facilities are expected to be a game-changer for Delvin GAA, providing a reliable training ground and enhancing their ability to nurture young talent.

The opening marks the beginning of a new era for the club, one that promises continued growth and success.
