Burke meets local Lottery Good Causes finalists

A number of organisations from Westmeath and Longford are among the 35 finalists that will proceed to the National Lottery Good Causes Awards gala event in October.

Mullingar Handball Club – nominated in the Sport category – support elite handball players and the wider community through their Age Active, All Star, Mothers and Others and Dad’s and Lads initiatives.

Helium Arts – nominated in the Arts and Culture category – empower young people with lifelong health conditions through creativity and the arts.

Cian’s Kennels – nominated in the Health and Wellbeing category – bring pets closer to families of young people with a long-term illness.

Minister Peter Burke has met representatives of the local groups, and spoke of his admiration for the essential services they provide in their communities.

“I am honoured to play a part in such an occasion and for the opportunity to meet Evelyn Neary of Cian’s Kennels CLG, Helene Hugel of Helium Arts, and Sandra Boland and Katie Groome of Mullingar Handball Club,” said.

“I know that the three groups work tirelessly for the good of others and to see their efforts recognised in the Good Causes Awards is heartening. The event is a wonderful way to highlight the work being carried out, not just in my own area, but all over the country by the thousands of groups who have received funding from Good Causes.

“I wish these organisations the best of luck in October and I will of course be cheering them on later in the year.”

The National Lottery Good Causes Awards 2024 take place on Saturday October 12 in Kilashee House Hotel in Kildare, where each of the seven category winners will receive €10,000 and the overall Good Cause of the Year an additional €25,000.

The categories are: Arts and Culture; Community; Health and Wellbeing; Heritage; Irish Language; Sport; Youth.
