The St Finian’s College principal John McHale said the important thing about the Leaving Cert was that most students “fulfilled their potential”, including those who were academically inclined and those who found school challenging.

Several dozen students turned up at the school to share their results with friends and teachers on Friday.

“We had three students in who got max points and five students who had over 600 points,” said Mr McHale.

“We had 57% of our students get over 400 points too, so lots will be very confident of getting their choices when CAO offers come out on Wednesday (August 28).”

Mr McHale said St Finian’s College has had success with recent additions to its curriculum.

“We’ve recently introduced technology and DCG to the Leaving Cert programme and it’s been very successful for us,” he said.

“Last year, two of our students in DCG were joint first in Ireland and one of our girls last year also came first in technology.

“When we move in to our new building, we’re going to extend the programme further and introduce engineering and construction studies.

“That’s what the industry is looking for, people with a skill set in those areas.”

Mr McHale said students also performed well in subjects the school would traditionally be known for, such as music and art, and that there was also success in core subjects.
