GALLERY: Harriers athlete wins ladies race at Tullynally Challenge
North Westmeath Athletic Club hosted another successful 5k race on Wednesday, last August 21. This popular race, established in 2002, continues to attract elite runners from across the country and beyond. The fast course left the town of Castlepollard, proceeded through the scenic grounds of Tullynally Castle, then looped back into the town to finish.
Wednesday’s race attracted 296 entries and all participants received beautiful bespoke castle medals thanks to Quest Merchandise.
This event was only possible with the support of the local business, active community groups and the many residents who came out to support the athletes.
The organisers would like to thank the Westmeath Civil Defence volunteers for ensuring the safety of the runners, the local Castlepollard traffic committee for traffic management and the many volunteers who gave up their evening to marshal the route and give out refreshments and medals.
We also greatly appreciate the Castle Varagh Hotel, who provided the meeting room for registration, Market Fresh, who provided all the fruit, Fresh Today, Oldcastle, who provided the water, Westmeath Sports Partnership, and Westmeath County Council, who provided signage, and Athletics Ireland for valued advice and support.
In particular, we would like to thank the Tullynally Estate for their continued faith in us, and for allowing us to hold a race on their beautiful grounds.
Prizes were awarded and there were fantastic performances all around. In the male category, taking first prize was Sean Doran of the Clonliffe Harriers at 15:40 minutes; second prize went to Diarmuid Fagan of Mullingar Harriers at 15:46, and third to Ross Killalea also of Mullingar Harriers coming in at 16 minutes.
In the female category, Claire Fagan of Mullingar Harriers took first prize in 17:17 minutes, second was Faye Dervan of Dublin City Harriers at 17:27, and third was Laura McDonnell of Rathfarnham at 17:52.
We congratulate all the runners, and a great evening was had by all.
We look forward to bringing the race back to Castlepollard again next year.
