A day to remember: Matt Slevin Memorial Tournament 2024

The 2024 Matt Slevin Memorial Tournament was a tremendous success, attracting hundreds of young participants to Moynihan Park for a memorable morning of football.

Blessed with glorious sunshine, the event featured eight U10 boys and girls teams from local GAA clubs, with the action kicking off after a stirring rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann by 11-year-old Grace Lambden.

The teams, led out to the pitch by military piper David Kelly, played three 20-minute matches, showcasing impressive skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The atmosphere was electric, with parents and supporters cheering enthusiastically from the sidelines, creating a truly community-driven event.

The presence of the Sam Maguire trophy added to the excitement, with all teams posing for a group photo before the games. Each child received a medal and, more importantly, a well-earned ice cream as a reward for their efforts. Ballynacargy GAA expressed heartfelt thanks to everyone involved, including referees, coaches, supporters, and special guests.

Particular appreciation was extended to the Slevin family for their ongoing sponsorship and to Jason Wallace, the lead organiser, for his meticulous planning.

The day was a fitting tribute to Matt Slevin and Fr Paschal Slevin, leaving everyone eager for next year’s tournament. The tournament certainly highlighted the power of sport in bringing people together.
