CLUB OF THE YEAR FINALIST: Milltownpass Scouts

Westmeath Examiner Community & Sports Awards

Milltownpass Scouts are making a significant impact on society by empowering their youth members to achieve their full potential as responsible citizens. Post-Covid, the group emerged stronger than ever, with a renewed focus on inclusivity and support for all members.

Recognising the diverse needs of their youth members, Milltownpass Scout group have placed a stronger emphasis on supporting individuals with physical, as well as neurodivergent needs.

This commitment is evident through active participation in the national inclusion team and the establishment of their own inclusion team. These teams work to create smoother transitions into Scouting, ensuring that every young person feels welcomed and supported.

Inclusion is a priority for the group, even during fundraising events. At their Christmas event, the Santa Express Train in Mullingar last year, the group introduced sensory carriages on every train, along with a separate, calmer waiting area and a sensory room. Those thoughtful additions ensured that all attendees, regardless of sensory sensitivities, could fully enjoy the event.

Milltownpass Scouts also prioritise the personal development of youth members, who range in age from six to 26 years. Through outdoor education activities, community projects, and social events, the group foster growth and encourage participation in leadership roles. That holistic approach helps to develop Scouts to become responsible, engaged citizens.

In every aspect of their work, Milltownpass Scouts demonstrate a commitment to inclusion, empowerment, and community building, setting a strong example for other Scouting groups to follow – and all that is completed by a group of volunteers, dedicated to developing and enhancing the lives of their youth members.
