Mick Lambe’s unwavering dedication to rugby and his community has made him a central figure in Westmeath’s sporting landscape. His lifelong commitment to the sport has now been rightfully recognised with the prestigious Westmeath Hall of Fame Sports Award, an honour that underscores the significant impact he has had on rugby in the region.
Mick’s journey in rugby began in 1975 under unexpected circumstances. He was called upon to fill in as a hooker for Mullingar RFC’s thirds team, a position he had never played before. Despite the suddenness of the request, Mick took to the challenge with enthusiasm and determination, and from that moment on, his passion for rugby was ignited.
What started as an impromptu game quickly evolved into a long and distinguished playing career. Mick’s versatility on the pitch was one of his hallmarks, as he played across various positions with notable success, although he truly excelled in the back row. His commitment to the game and his team was evident in every match, earning him the respect and admiration of his teammates and opponents alike.
However, Mick’s contributions to rugby extend far beyond his playing days. From an early stage in his rugby career, he recognised the importance of contributing off the pitch as well. He joined the committee of Mullingar RFC at a young age, eager to help shape the future of the club. His involvement in the club’s administration was extensive, and over the years, he took on multiple roles that would define his legacy.
Mick served as a youth coach, mini and youth coordinator, Vice-President, and eventually, President of Mullingar RFC. His presidency, from 2013 to 2015, was particularly significant, marking a period of growth and success for the club.
During his tenure as president, Mick was instrumental in overseeing several key developments, most notably the groundwork for the club’s AstroTurf pitch. This project was a game-changer for Mullingar RFC, providing a state-of-the-art facility that enhanced training and development opportunities for players of all ages. The pitch has since become a vital resource for the club, helping to nurture talent and improve performance across all teams.
Mick’s leadership during this period also coincided with one of the most successful eras in the club’s history, culminating in the team winning 13 cups in his final year as President. This remarkable achievement was a testament to Mick’s vision, dedication, and ability to inspire those around him.
Perhaps most importantly, Mick’s commitment to fostering young talent has had a lasting impact on rugby in Mullingar and beyond.
As a youth coordinator, he played a crucial role in guiding the development of young players, some of whom went on to represent Ireland at various levels—a remarkable feat for a junior club. His efforts in creating a supportive and thriving environment for young players have ensured that his legacy will be felt for generations to come, not only within the club but also in the wider rugby community.
Mick Lambe’s story is one of passion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to rugby and he has enriched the lives of so many people. His contributions to Mullingar RFC and the sport as a whole are immeasurable, making him a truly deserving recipient of the Westmeath Hall of Fame Sports Award.
