OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FINALIST: St Munna’s Camogie team

Westmeath Examiner Community & Sports Awards

St Munna’s Camogie team made Westmeath sporting history in 2023 by bringing the club’s first All-Ireland camogie honour back to Turin. It's the first time the club has ever reached that level, setting a new standard of excellence for camogie in the parish of Turin and surrounding areas.

The team’s journey was carefully nurtured, from the county championships right to the All-Ireland, under the guidance of the dedicated management team comprising Paddy Maloney, Nikki Clinton, Alan Aughey and Katie Heffernan, whose leadership was instrumental in the team’s success.

Led by captain Sheila McGrath, the team from Turin defeated the Ulster Champions, Crossmaglen Rangers, 2-7 to 1-5 in the final, securing their place in camogie history.

Two goals in the opening period from Sandra McGrath propelled St Munna’s to a hard-earned victory over Crossmaglen in that All-Ireland Club Junior ‘B’ camogie final at NGDC Abbotstown last December.

Earlier in the season, Sheila McGrath, who notched 3-4 from play, inspired St Munna’s to Leinster glory.

The successful St Munna's team was: Bridget Leavy; Andrea Glynn, Fiona Glynn, Sinéad McGovern; Rebecca O’Neill, Shauna McGrath, Sandra Carey; Caitríona Egan, Laura Geoghegan; Abbie Reihill, Sheila McGrath, Nessa Burns; Alice Galvin, Olivia Glynn, Sandra McGrath. Subs used: Donna Martin for Galvin, Nicola Burns for Geoghegan.

St Munna’s players are not just champions on the pitch but also outstanding role models for their community and younger members in the area. Their efforts and achievements are inspirational for the future generations of this small but high achieving club.
