Athlone Film Club returns next week with 'I Like Movies'

Athlone Film Club is delighted to announce its return to the Dean Crowe Theatre next Tuesday evening, September 10.

Set up in 2008 under the patronage of the Dean Crowe Theatre Trust, Athlone Film Club aims to give local audiences the opportunity to see a wide range of films from around the world that rarely make it to commercial cinemas.

The 2024-2025 season kicks off with the highly acclaimed comedy drama 'I Like Movies' - an appropriate title for the film club to mark its return!

The film is set in 2003 in Ontario, Canada where a socially awkward and movie obsessed 17-year-old Lawrence Kweller, played by Isaiah Lehtinen, dreams of attending film school in New York City.

Fully convinced he can earn the hefty tuition fees needed to achieve this dream, he gets a part-time job in a video store. There, store manager Alana, played by Romina D'Ugo, takes him under her wing and a complicated friendship soon develops.

Wracked with anxiety about his future, Lawrence begins sabotaging relationships and alienating the most important people in his life.  'I Like Movies' is a gem of a film based on director Chandler Levack’s own formative experiences.

"Lehtinen delivers a wonderful performance as a kid who is simultaneously perfectly sure of himself and sure of nothing. He has to walk the tightrope between lovable and cringeworthy, and that isn’t an easy thing to do," said reviewer Andy Howell in 'Film Threat'.

Further information on this film and the upcoming season can be found on the website - www.athlonefilmclub.com - by downloading the Athlone Film Club app (android devices only) and on Facebook and Instagram.

Athlone Film Club is very much looking forward to welcoming back both regular and new cinephiles to the Dean Crowe Theatre. Doors open at the Dean Crowe Theatre, Athlone on Tuesday, September 10 at 7.30pm and the film starts at 8pm.

'I Like Movies' is an English language film and the running time is 99 minutes. Entry is €10 per film, cash only please.
