Charity Cycle raises €8,165 for special cause

The annual charity cycle organised by Gerry and Phil Keon of The Wagon Wheel pub, Ballynacargy, has once again proven to be a tremendous success, raising €8,165 for the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar.

The event, which traditionally coincides with the All-Ireland Football Final, saw participants and the local community come together to support a very worthy local charity.

The 20km Canal Line cycle, which had an earlier start this year, attracted cyclists of all ages, with a minimum participation age of 16. The route featured water stations and first aid services, ensuring safety and comfort for all involved. Following the cycle, participants were treated to refreshments and live music, contributing to the festive atmosphere of the day.

The day concluded with a raffle offering a variety of prizes, including a cyclist draw, further adding to the fundraising efforts. The community's involvement and generosity were evident throughout, underscoring the importance of the event and the difference it makes in supporting the SCBU.

Gerry and Phil Keon have been dedicated to this cause for many years, and their hard work, along with the unwavering support of the local community, continues to make a meaningful impact. This year’s event not only upheld the tradition but also exceeded expectations, demonstrating the power of community spirit in achieving great things for a worthy cause.

Geraldine Kavanagh, Nurse Manager, and Trish Gill, Assistant Director of Nursing, were delighted to accept the donation on behalf of the SCBU. Both expressed their gratitude, noting that the funds would significantly contribute to the specialised care provided at the unit.

The organisers thanked everyone for supporting this year's event and indeed their many such charity cycles over the years.

Since 2015, the Wagon Wheel charity efforts have raised substantial amounts for various causes, including €5,392.10 for a local fundraiser; €4,472.20 for Crumlin Hospital in 2016; €1,574 for the SCBU in 2017; €4,230.50 for LARC in 2018; €6,167.50 for Saplings School in 2019; and €1,696 for Make-A-Wish in 2022. These cumulative efforts highlight the community's dedication and the organisers' great commitment to supporting worthy causes.

Gerry Keon said the response of the local people was outstanding. "We are delighted with the success of this year's event and grateful to everyone who took part and supported it in any way. It is a great boost to the Special Care Baby Unit," he added.
