Westmeath club reaches two football finals in New York

It was a memorable weekend for the Westmeath club in New York as the club reached two football finals at the senior and junior 'B' grades.

In senior, Westmeath overcame Donegal on a 1-14 to 3-7 scoreline. Israel Ilunga (Rosemount) and Jordan Ajani (St Mary's, Rochfortbridge) are part of the Westmeath senior side in the Big Apple, as is Adam Loughlin (The Downs).

Back in 2013, Ilunga was part of the Westmeath team which reached the Leinster minor football final - the last time the county has contested the final at that grade.

In the junior 'B' championship in New York, Westmeath enjoyed a 4-6 to 0-12 win over Tyrone.

Westmeath will now contest both finals next Sunday at Gaelic Park, New York, which is a fine achievement. They meet Kerry in the senior football final at 4pm and that will be preceded by the junior 'B' final against St Pat's (2pm).

It will be their third final this year - the senior hurling side played Tipperary in the recent hurling decider.

The Westmeath team that beat Kerry in the group stages of the SFC was as follows: Mark Galligan; Alan Curran, Israel Ilunga, Shane Fagan; Rob Wharton, Eric Lowndes, Sean Moore (0-1); Shane Carthy (0-2), Adam Loughlin; Dan O'Sullivan (0-1), Frank O’Reilly, Jordan Ajani (0-1); Killian Butler (0-6), Gavin O’Brien, Jack Robinson (0-6). Subs: Kieran Murphy (0-2), Darragh Carmody (0-1), Conor Larkin (0-1), Brian Travers (0-1), Pat Guerin, Stephen Nolan, Stephen Gargan.
