Mullingar impress in high-scoring stalemate

Glenanne 2s 6-6 Mullingar 1s

Leinster Men’s Div 3

On Saturday September 14, Mullingar Men’s 1s travelled to Dublin to face Glenanne 2s. Mullingar were without a number of key players and had to rely on some 2s players to take their place.

The first quarter was mostly Glenanne but at the death of the quarter, Mullingar took the lead through Marc Watters after he received a great pass from David Kingston. Watters deflected the ball through the keeper’s legs to give Mullingar a 1-0 lead going into the first quarter break.

The second quarter saw Mullingar playing excellent hockey and it showed on the score line as they went into the half time interval with a 4-0 lead, all goals to that point coming per skipper Marc Watters.

The third quarter went horribly wrong for Mullingar as it saw Glenanne score two goals. Mullingar completely took their foot off the pedal and it showed on the score line going into the third quarter break.

The fourth quarter didn’t start too great again for Mullingar as Glenanne scored first to make it 4-3.

Not long after their goal, Marc Watters got his fifth score of the contest but Glenanne responded with another goal to make it 5-4.

After some great build up play from Watters and David Kingston, Owen Wiltshire found himself on the score sheet to give Mullingar a two goal lead with eight minutes left.

Glenanne upped the pressure and it resulted in them nabbing two late goals to end the game with a massive score line of 6-6.

Mullingar will feel it is two points dropped especially when being 4-0 at half time.

Mullingar 1s are next in action when they face Naas 1s on September 28 in Wilson’s Hospital School at 12.

Goalscorers: Marc Watters x5; Owen Wiltshire x1.
