Love all on Sunday Funday

Mullingar Tennis Club notes

In recent months, Sunday Funday at Mullingar Tennis Club has attracted eager participants week after week. For just €2, players aged five to 17, whether members or non-members, can enjoy an hour of tennis, making it a budget-friendly and accessible way for families to stay active.

A group of transition year coaches, who have been training since October, lead a series of games and activities between 2pm and 3pm. The sessions are designed to introduce tennis fundamentals in a fun, relaxed setting, accommodating players of all skill levels. Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience, Sunday Funday ensures everyone has the chance to participate, learn, and enjoy the game. The atmosphere is friendly and inclusive, and participants only need to bring €2, a positive attitude, and the desire to play. All necessary equipment, including rackets, is provided.

It’s more than just a tennis session – it’s a community event where young players can forge new friendships, boost their confidence, and develop a lifelong passion for the sport.

Friday Tennis Junior Night

The Mullingar Tennis Club Friday Junior Tennis Night, for ages 14-19, offers an opportunity for newcomers to the sport and seasoned players looking to sharpen their skills. If you don’t have your own equipment, no problem, the club will provide rackets if needed.

The event is free for club members, and if you’re not a member, the cost is just €2 per session. It is organised by the club’s junior captains, Charlie Dupuis and Noor Elamin.

This writer (Kyle Faherty) has attended a couple times over the last few weeks and got a chance to play alongside all the participants and ask them what they think of the tennis night. I have only heard good feedback and seen a showcase of great tennis from people of all ages. I’ve seen 10-year-olds beat 15-year-olds – which just shows the range of talents at Mullingar Tennis Club.

It’s at 5-7pm every Friday, and if you or someone you know would like to take part, go to the club at 5pm this Friday and join in.

Opportunity for TY students

Following the success of last year’s Transition Year (TY) programme, Mullingar Tennis Club will run it again for the 2024/25 TY students. This year, the programme will be offered primarily to club members, and an information night is scheduled for September, hosted by the Junior Committee (details to come).

Last year’s TY participants had a fantastic experience, with something to suit everyone’s interests. Whether you’re into journalism, media, marketing, graphic design, umpiring, or coaching, the year-long programme offers a range of opportunities. Students will learn coaching skills, specifically how to work with children, and get the chance to apply those skills during the various camps at the club throughout the year.

The programme also opens doors for potential summer work, providing participants with a rewarding way to build experience while earning some money.

In the coming weeks, keep an eye out for posters at your school showing more details about the programme. If you’re interested, ask your TY coordinator for information. You can also contact Guillaume Dupuis at Guillaume17dupuis@gmail.com.

As a participant in last year’s TY programme, I can recommend it.
