Grinding it out in mud and gravel as winter season begins

After mixed summer weather, it is now time for winter cycling and all that goes with it. We are now (almost) back in leggings, fitting rear mudguards, front and rear lights (although these are recommended year-round) and thankfully, some might say, back to a reduced pace and shorter spins for a while.

To be fair, winter is a great season to reset and settle down after what is normally a hectic summer. For some, it means a break from racing and touring to do sportives, and for others it means a return to a more consistent period of cycling now that schools are back and holidays are a memory. A lot of members seem to do more cycling over the winter as there is less pressure from other areas of life.

Regardless of how you view this part of the year, if you are cycling, please remember to attend to all of the tips above and also to wear bright, reflective, and warm clothing as temperatures will drop from this month onwards.

Committee News

At their final meeting on Monday chairman Ed Tyrell drew his term to a close. Ed has served for seven years including two as chairman and deserves a rest. No doubt he will continue to be part of the club activities such as the GP and Tour of the Lakes as he has done for several years, and he certainly did an excellent job steering Lakeside Wheelers over the last two years.

As usual there is always a project in the pipeline when a new committee take over, so after this year’s AGM, scheduled for Friday November 8 (7pm) in Clarkes bar, another new era will commence. Members are encouraged to attend the AGM as it is one of the most important club meetings.

Cyclo cross and gravel

The Navan Cycling Club cyclo cross race two weeks ago attracted a big field including Wheelers Neil McDermott, Richie Lenihan, Tadhg Marshall, Kevin Marshall, Siobhan Marshall, Caoimhe Marshall, Padraig Marshall, Kate Horohoe, Daniel Horohoe and Ruairi Horohoe. Congratulations to Caoimhe, who won the U16 girls race, while her sister Siobhan was third in the U12s just behind Kate Horohoe in second.

Lakeside Wheelers stage their own cyclo cross race on Sunday December 15 at Belvedere House and Gardens. Similar to last year, this year’s race will be part of the Leinster cyclo cross league, so save the date to either take part, volunteer or spectate.

Further notice of the event will follow.

The annual Lakelander Gravel Grinder event in Fermanagh, last week, was a hard, rugged event covering several mud and gravel stretches and with the wet weather, it was a long slog. Well done to all members who participated in both of these events.
