'I love The Shining by Stephen King'

Writing Matters: Lorraine Murphy

What is your favourite book?

God, that’s a tough one. I love The Shining by Stephen King but the book I enjoyed the most recently is Graham Norton’s Frankie. It’s a beautiful book, I loved every word.

What book do you wish you had written?

The Housemaid by Freida McFadden. A great suspenseful story with twists and turns, I couldn’t put it down.

It’s been topping the charts for a long time for a reason.

What story are you most proud of?

He Loves Me Not is my favourite book that I’ve written. I decided that I was going to say everything I wanted to in this one and brought in many events that happened in real life. The world seems to be growing less tolerant in the last few years and it concerns me where that will lead. This book let me explore that idea through fictional characters, and have fun along the way.

Guiltiest reading pleasure?

Probably the Viz Comic. I love Viz, I grew up reading it, often bursting out laughing on the bus home from college. It’s funny to this day, especially Top Tips.

Most memorable book related event you’ve ever been to?

Meeting Graham Norton a couple of weeks ago at Eason was pretty special. He was so down to earth and approachable.

Biggest writing inspiration?

Liz Nugent. Unravelling Oliver made me realise I wanted to be a writer and Strange Sally Diamond is in a league of its own.

Who is Westmeath’s greatest writer?

Patricia Gibney, and not only is she the greatest writer but she’s a wonderful person too. There are so many good writers in this town.

If you could have only five books for the rest of your life, what would they be?

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood.

Matilda by Roald Dahl

Me and My Mate Jeffrey by Niall Breslin

The Shining by Stephen King
