‘I have you now, you are going to die today’
A man accused of attempting to murder another man in an alleged feud related incident in Mullingar earlier this year is due to apply for High Court bail this week.
Michael Nevin Jnr (39), 45 Grange Heights, Mullingar, was before a sitting of Mullingar District Court last week in connection to an incident on August 2 at Austin Friar Street.
The father of four stands accused of leaving Anthony Dinnegan, a father in his 30s, with critical injuries including to his bowel, lung and liver.
The part-time bar employee initially appeared at a special court sitting on August 7, during which he was remanded in custody following a lengthy and contested bail hearing.
That hearing was held in connection to charges levelled against Mr Nevin on August 2 and a number of road traffic related matters which arose the month previously.
The charges included those of assault causing harm, threatening to kill or cause him serious harm, production of a black handled kitchen knife as a weapon during a dispute, on 2 August at Austin Friar Street.
Detective Garda Adrian Reilly played CCTV footage, telling the court the stabbing happened "in broad daylight", shortly after 5pm when the victim, Anthony Dinnegan, left his home on Austin Friar Street with his partner.
Two cars, it was revealed, drove to the area, causing the couple to run, and the group gave chase.
His partner and their child ran for cover into a nearby restaurant.
The court was told it will be the state’s case that when Nevin caught up with his alleged victim, he told him: ‘I have you now, you are going to die today.’
Mr Dinnegan sustained a series of potentially life-threatening injuries, which included injuries to his bowel, liver and lungs. He also underwent emergency surgery and spent a number of days in hospital.
The court heard how the alleged incident stemmed from a worsening feud involving two local families over an alleged €50 drug debt.
The alleged feud, the court was told, involved up to 15 separate violent episodes, including criminal damage, threats to kill, discharge of a firearm and the discovery of stolen firearm.
Mr Nevin Jnr was further charged with issuing a threat to Lucy Dinnegan at 30 Greenpark, Ballymahon on July 4, during which Nevin Jnr is alleged to have threatened to kill or cause serious harm to her two sons, Johnny and Oliver Dinnegan Jnr.
Nevin Jnr was further charged with a series of road traffic offences, including travelling in a stolen Mercedes at Cloncollig Roundabout, Tullamore, County Offaly, on August 7.
Detective Garda Kevin Lennon said Nevin Jnr made no reply when two further charges of attempted murder and violent disorder connected to the alleged attack on Mr Dinnegan were put to him last Thursday morning.
Defence solicitor Louis Kiernan said his client acceded to a further week in custody, adding that a bail hearing for Mr Nevin was due to be heard in the High Court this week and would likely be heard in full.
Judge Bernadette Owens proceeded to remand Mr Nevin Jnr in continuing custody ahead of the sitting of Mullingar District Court on Thursday to allow for the furnishing of directions from the DPP.
