Motorists warned of scam involving fake QR code stickers at parking meters
Motorists are being warned about a scam involving parking meters.
Videos online appear to show a fake QR code sticker on machines to allow drivers pay for parking via their phone.
Dublin City Council say it is aware of a bogus QR sticker that is being placed on some car park pay and display machines in different parts of Dublin.
If someone inadvertently scans the QR code, they are then brought to a fraudulent website which requests credit card details and other personal data.
The council is advising motorists not to scan any QR codes or barcodes that may appear on parking metres. Instead motorists are asked to download the parking app payzone.
It’s understood one woman was scammed out of €1,000 because she mistakenly scanned one of these QR codes. Gardai say they are making enquiries.
