New Forest denied in Women's Challenge Cup final

The Westmeath warrior women representing New Forest travelled to Blessington Lakes Golf Club to compete in the finals of the Women's Challenge Cup. It had been a long journey, both physically and mentally, from their very first fixture in early spring at Glasson Golf Club. That first round saw New Forest emerge victorious, and subsequent victories in the following seven rounds culminated in this final journey to Blessington.

Ninety-seven teams were narrowed down to just two battle-weary sides: New Forest and Blessington Lakes. Filled with anticipation and hopeful expectation, the red and black women’s army marched towards County Wicklow to commence battle.

Previous rounds had seen close contests, breathtaking finishes, exquisite shots, jaw-dropping play, and outstanding talent. The commitment, dedication, and hard graft of the whole panel was as evident in Blessington as it had been on that dull April day in Glasson. The team on the day—Ann Eighan, Fran Kavanagh, Maura Mulhall, Bernie Bennett, and Teresa Birmingham—gave it their all, but unfortunately, it was not to be their day. Local knowledge played a big part in the result, and a dejected New Forest graciously accepted defeat.

After congratulations and commiserations were exchanged, both teams retired to the cosy clubhouse for the presentation of trophies and medals. A delicious meal was served in an atmosphere of congeniality and camaraderie. Both team managers stood to congratulate their respective teams on their achievements, and representatives from Golf Ireland presented medals to the winners and runners-up.

New Forest team manager Mary Fallon thanked the ladies for their unwavering commitment, loyalty, and dedication to the team, to each other, and to their club throughout the long campaign. Mary also thanked the caddies for their continued support, assistance, and constant advice and encouragement to the players. She acknowledged the strong team spirit among the whole panel and expressed how proud and honoured she was to have managed them throughout the tournament.
