Attempted murder charge concerning feud in Mullingar

A man in his 30s has been charged with the attempted murder of another man during an alleged feud related incident in Mullingar earlier this year.

Christy Nevin (30), with an address at 25 Grange Crescent, Mullingar appeared at a sitting of Mullingar District Court last Thursday to face four charges arising from an incident at Austin Friar Street, Mullingar, on August 2.

The Mullingar man was charged with a total of four charges connected to an incident on August 2 on Austin Friar Street.

Detective Garda Adrian O’Reilly said he had arrested Mr Nevin the night before and took him to Mullingar Garda Station, where the four charges against him were read out.

In addition to being charged with attempted murder, Mr Nevin was also charged with the possession of articles, namely a pick axe handle and a hatchet, as well as violent disorder.

Det Garda O’Reilly said Mr Nevin remained silent and gave no reply after caution.

The incident in question is one of 15 similar incidents which gardaí are currently investigating concerning a feud between two local groups over an alleged €50 drug debt.

Anthony Dinnegan, the court had heard at an earlier sitting, had undergone emergency surgery after sustaining a string of serious injuries to his abdomen in the aftermath of the August 2 incident.

There was bail application on behalf of Mr Nevin and Judge Owens remanded the accused in custody to a sitting of Mullingar District Court via video link on Thursday of this week.
