There was great excitement in the school gymnasium at the recent opening ceremony for the 2024-25 academic year at Athboy Community School when the first school captains were chosen. Although there has been an active prefect system in the school for many years, this was the first time in the school’s history that vaptains were chosen from the student body.

The two captains are excellent role models for other students to look up to, said Ms Garrihy.

They were chosen from the cohort of sixth year prefects. The candidates had put themselves forward by way of application and had to have carried out the role of prefect to an excellent standard.

All candidates were considered and a shortlist was decided by the principal, deputy principal, relevant year heads and the student leadership coordinator, Miss Di Lucia. The teaching staff then voted on the short listed candidates.

The result is that the school captains for the 2024-25 academic year are Fiona Boylan and Keelin McKeogh, “two worthy and exemplary candidates” said Ms Garrihy.
