International Uilleann Piping Day events in Mullingar

The Midlands Uilleann Pipers Club are holding events in Mullingar to mark International Uilleann Piping Day, a worldwide event to celebrate a unique Irish tradition instrument.

Midlands Uilleann Pipers are a group of musicians, mostly pipers, who meet every month to play and learn pipes and traditional Irish music together.

As part of the annual event, they are holding a piping information morning in Mullingar Library on Saturday, November 2, (11.30am-1pm).

Joe Gavin from the Midlands Uilleann Pipers said: “This is an informative morning where musicians or budding musicians came come along and hear the pipes, give them a try if they wish, and find out all about the uilleann pipes, where to start learning and lessons.

“It would be ideal for any trad musicians who may have and interest in piping but don’t know how to begin. Tutors and pipers will be on hand to give advice and answer any questions about how to start uilleann piping.”

In the afternoon pipers will gather in Daly’s bar (3-6pm) to play some tunes, and all are invited in to hear this unique instrument. All trad musicians are welcome along to join in.

The Irish midlands region once had a strong uilleann piping tradition of both players and pipemakers and the Midlands Uilleann Pipers are proud to continue that heritage and hope people can join them for their part of a worldwide annual celebration of Irish piping.
