Coralstown Kinnegad LGFA celebrate 40th anniversary
A fantastic day of celebration marked the 40th anniversary of Coralstown Kinnegad LGFA on Saturday October 19, as members young and old gathered to honour four decades of commitment to women’s football and community spirit.
The festivities kicked off in the afternoon as the children enjoyed games and activities on the AstroTurf, filling the air with laughter and excitement. Later, the celebrations moved indoors for an elegant afternoon tea party, where adults gathered to reminisce and toast the club’s achievements.
Music and entertainment were provided by Finbar Cody, who had everyone singing and dancing into the evening. Some members of the original 1984 team showed they hadn’t lost their touch – not only with a football but also on the dance floor, where they delighted attendees with their lively moves and energy.
The committee extended heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make the day such a success, from organisers to attendees, as the Coralstown Kinnegad community celebrated a milestone built on teamwork, dedication, and the joy of sport.
Here’s to the next 40 years of memories, friendship, and football.
The day was a collection of former players, present players and supporters, an acknowledgement of how the club were set up and where they came from. They were a standalone club in the early years, but really got going as a club in the early 2000s.
They have contested a lot of finals over the years.
Three of the founding members, Frank Mulligan (RIP), Frank Kiernan (RIP) and Dermot Cooney (RIP) were represented by family members, while Mairead Greene (Cleary) was represented by her sister, Deirdre.
In 1988 Coralstown Kinnegad won the senior title for the only time. They have enjoyed a series of ‘A’ successes with good underage teams in the last eight years, which is clear progress.
There is a strong connection with the community and they have great facilities as a club given the great progress made by Coralstown Kinnegad GAA in recent years. In the early days they played in Cunningham’s field near the station in Killucan.
Current committee members are chairperson Maureen Uí Mhuirí; Mary Walsh, Marcella McDonald, Declan and Ellie Kiernan, Gráinne Lynch and Deirdre McGrath.
