FG to make attacks on retail workers a stand alone offence - Burke

Fine Gael will introduce a dedicated offence for attacks on retail workers if returned to Government, the Minister for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment, Peter Burke TD, has said.

It comes amid growing concerns from retailers reporting increased criminal activity on their premises.

"Since taking on the Enterprise portfolio earlier this year, I’ve engaged extensively with retailers across the country. It’s clear that these businesses, which are the backbone of our economy and communities, need more support to address rising costs,” said Minister Burke.

“A key issue raised by retailers is the sharp rise in in-store theft and anti-social behaviour. We have listened and are prioritising their concerns. If re-elected, Fine Gael will introduce a stand-alone criminal offence specifically for attacks on retail workers.

“We also plan to support retailers by providing resources to enhance security, whether through hiring security personnel or installing CCTV. These practical steps will help shops nationwide combat anti-social behaviour.”

Minister Burke also highlighted the recent €4,000 Power Up Grant, which he secured in Budget 2025, to help retailers manage costs over the busy Christmas season.

“The Government has allocated €170 million in cash supports specifically for the retail and hospitality sectors as part of the budget process,” he said.

“This Department has already paid out over €244 million through the Increased Cost of Business Grant this summer to SMEs, so this further grant will bring Government’s direct support into small businesses this year to almost a half a billion euro.”
