Order of Malta crews dress up to fund new ambulance and HQ

Last Sunday week, the Mullingar Unit of the Order of Malta Ambulance Corps held two Halloween Fancy Dress parties in the Greville Arms Hotel. The first party was for under 16s and there were some extremely scary creatures and two cute ones! The music on the night was supplied by Eamon McLoughlin, with lighting support by Dan McLoughlin.

The senior 80s/90s disco was also well attended and Christy Maye and all the staff in the Greville Arms Hotel were as helpful as possible. There was a raffle held at each event and generosity of the businesses in the Mullingar area meant that there were some wonderful prizes on offer.

A full list of the businesses that supported our venture will be on the Unit’s Facebook page. “A massive thank you to every single one of them,” said Colin Watters, officer in charge of the Mullingar Unit.

All the funds raised will go towards the purchase of a new ambulance and towards the building of a new premises, which the Unit hopes to work on over the next few years.

“Our current 4x4 Ambulance is 17 years old and we will hope to replace it in the next two years. So, all in all, we are going to fed up coming up with fundraising ideas,” said Colin.

“In the last few weeks, we have got the ambulance we won through a Facebook competition that Lifeline Ambulance Services were running. Even putting a free ambulance on the road costs a lot of money, but thankfully the generosity of the Mullingar public at our street and church collection has helped towards that.

“While our work at events slows up towards Christmas, what never eases off is our Patient Transport Service, which is as busy as ever, and our crews travel the length and breath of the country dropping clients to appointments and procedures.”

Colin offered congratulations to new members who have been out on duty with the unit for the first time in recent weeks. “A special well done to all our members who gave up their time to cover the visit of the relics of St Bernadette to the Cathedral of Christ the King.

“Our Unit has also been busy with the GAA finals at Cusack Park and not forgetting the Intermediate Football final in Lakepoint Park, the home of St Loman’s.”
